Tips on How to Prepare Your Car for Summer

The summer may mean several things to you. You may want to go out with your family for a long drive in Raleigh, NC, and enjoy the weather from inside the comfort of your car.

The summer, however, requires you to take special care of your car if you want to enjoy the perks of driving through the streets in the hot weather. Here are some summer driving tips for what you can do to prepare your car for the summer.

  • Test out your car’s air conditioning to ensure that it’s working properly and have it inspected for any leaks. Regular replacement of air filters will help to improve the quality of air inside the car. If the vents aren’t blowing cold air, you may need to recharge the system.
  • Check under the hood for any damage to hoses and rubber components. Make sure caps aren’t broken, and there is no debris blocking areas around the air filter or radiator. If there are oily/colorful liquids present, you’ll need to get a mechanic to inspect it.
  • Get your car battery tested with your mechanic to see if it needs replacement. Checking tire pressure and conducting tire rotation and balancing will help make handling easier and increase fuel efficiency. You can also switch your winter tires for summer tires so that you have a better grip on the road while driving.
  • Schedule oil changes regularly based on what is mentioned in the owner’s manual so that you can extend engine life. Topping up your fluids before heading out with your car in the summer is crucial. Make sure you check and top up on levels of your car’s coolant, brake fluid, windshield wiper fluid, and power steering fluid. A sufficient level of coolant will help to keep your radiator temperature in check.
  • Inspect your windshield wipers by checking that they’re in one piece and that they touch the glass. If they’re worn out, creating streaks, or contributing to a chattering sound, it’s time to get them replaced.
  • Have an emergency kit prepared to keep in the trunk of your car. Include spare tires, first aid kits, jumper cables, flares, a jack, and flashlights in it.
